If you are new to shaving, keep scrolling through this article to learn how to shave like a pro.

How to Shave

Here is the step-by-step on how to shave correctly.

#1. Prepare Your Beard

You need to soften your beard to make shaving easier and avoid irritation.

The most recommended time to shave is after a hot shower, as the water helps hydrate your beard.

Otherwise, Wet your beard with hot water if you don’t intend to shower yet.

#2. Lather Up

You need good shaving cream to lather up before shaving.

Take a small dollop of shaving cream and place it in a bowl.

Take your brush that you’ve pre=soaked with water and swirl the cream around until you get a nice thick lather.

Apply the lather with your brush on your beard in a swirling motion

#3. Shave

The correct way to shave is to start from the top. Start from your check by putting the razor head directly on your skin.

Lower the handle of the razor slowly until the blade cuts your beard. It’s essential not to use pressure, as the razor’s weight is sufficient.

Shave with the grain of your beard. Lather up and pass the razor over your face to ensure a clean finish.

Your goal is gradual beard reduction, not beard removal, in one deft razor over your face several times.

Lather Materials

Two of the most common lather materials are soap and shaving cream.

Both are preferable for shaving and have their pros and cons.

Soap

Soap generally has a glycerin base and comes in rounds or tubs in various scents.

Pros

  • Make shaving easier by removing oil
  • Allowed as carry-on luggage
  • More environmentally friendly

Cons

  • It needs a bowl or mug to facilitate proper lathering

Shaving Cream

Shaving cream has a soft or paste-like consistency depending on the brand.

Usually, shaving cream comes in a tube or other dispenser.

Pros

  • It saves time by eliminating the need to work up a lather
  • Consistent thickness
  • Compact size and has higher portability than soap

Cons

  • Limited protection to cuts
  • More expensive in the long run

How to Sharpen Your Razor

You need a sharp razor for smooth shaving.

If your blade is not sharp enough, it can lead to accidental cuts that can leave scars on your face.

Here are some tips to sharpen your razor blade.

  1. Pick a quiet time of the day when you have no distractions. Honing a razor blade can take more time than you think.
  2. Lay the razor flat on the hone. Go from one side’s upper corner to the bottom corner of the opposite side.
  3. Flip the razor to the other side, and start from that side’s upper corner to the lower corner of the starting side. Turn the razor sideways again once you reach the bottom.
  4. Repeat the X-pattern with equal pressure on each side, each stroke at the same angle and length as the opposing side. Lessen the pressure as you go.
