Remembering Junior Seau

1969

On January 19, Tiaina Baul Seau, Jr. was born to Tiaina Seau, Sr., and Luisa Mauga Seau in San Diego, California

1983

Attended Oceanside High School, lettering in football, basketball, and track and field

1986

Named offensive MVP in the Avocado League, led Oceanside to the CIF San Diego 2A championship game

1988

First college game action as a USC sophomore

1989

Helped USC beat Michigan 17-10 in the Rose Bowl, earned Associated Press All-America honors for the season
At USC, he was the first in a long line of great linebackers to wear jersey number 55

1990

On April 22, Seau was made the fifth overall pick of the 1990 NFL draft by San Diego Chargers
Early September that year, Seau played his debut game with San Diego Chargers

1995

Seau led the Chargers’ defense to a 17-13 victory over the Pittsburg Steelers in the AFC Championship game sending them to their first Super Bowl, despite playing with a pinched neck nerve
Seau played his Super Bowl game in September that year, but was unable to prevent his team’s defeat. Chargers lost 49-26 to the San Francisco 49ers

2003

In April, Seau traded to the Dolphins for a fifth-round pick in the 2004 NFL Draft
However, Seau’s tenure in the Miami club was marred by numerous injuries, limiting his playing time significantly

2006

Seau was released by the Dolphins on March 6, 2006
Seau announced his retirement at an emotional press conference on August 14, 2006, after signing a one-day contract with the San Diego Chargers
Seau returned to football just four days later, signing with the New England Patriots

2008

Seau was a prominent contributor to the Patriots undefeated regular season
Saw New England’s undefeated streak end with a Super Bowl loss to the New York Giants

2010

Announced his intention to retire for a second time on the television program Inside the NFL on January 13, 2010

2011

Inducted into the San Diego Chargers Hall of Fame on November 27, 2011, as part of Alumni Day ceremonies in Sunday’s sold-out game against the Denver Broncos at Qualcomm Stadium
