The Organic Truth: Should You Go Organic?
Most of the time, we’d choose organic over non-organic, but why is that?
With appearances in the media as part of a healthy lifestyle, organic food has grown highly popular over the years. Today, we can choose our veggies and fruits. However, does it really do anything for our health? Or is it just a label to help us feel better about ourselves?
What Does Organic Even Mean?
By definition, organic food is food that’s grown or processed without artificial pesticides, fertilizers, irradiation, industrial solvents, or food additives. It’s basically all-natural.
In the media, it’s often advertised as more nutritious, has lower calories, is pesticide-free, and is environmentally friendly in the media.
The Reality of Organic Food
Although the all-natural route seems to be the way to go these days, organic food isn’t really that beneficial.
The organic farming industry is definitely thriving, but organic food is much more expensive than regular food. Because of their “healthy” label, consumers are willing to pay extra to get their hands on some organic veggies.
Organic food is also not pesticide-free. Organic farms can still use pesticides, but they must be from natural sources. Natural pesticides such as copper sulfate and pyrethrin can be more harmful in the long run.
Also, if foods are pesticide-free, that doesn’t mean they’re healthier. Foods without pesticides can cause bacteria and viruses such as E.coli.
Organic farming also uses up more land to grow food due to the lack of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers.
Other than that, organic farm animals aren’t healthier because they are free-range. Free-range farm animals are exposed to parasites, pathogens, and predators, which can cause diseases later on.
