Mobile Takeover
Despite everything going mobile, having a smartphone on hand can be a double-edged sword. It holds everything you need to survive through the day, but it can also create a sense of dependency, cultivating an unhealthy lifestyle in the long run.
So, when does smartphone usage get to the point of addiction?
Signs of Smartphone Addiction
There are signs that show when you’ve spent way too much time on your phone. You might notice it, but what you’re experiencing might be a sign for you to lessen your screen time.
A couple of the most common signs of excessive smartphone usage is disrupted sleep and poor mental health. The blue light from screens suppresses hormones that promote sleep, making it harder to get proper sleep.
Your mental health can also become affected. With social media platforms growing significantly, we can feel like we’re missing out on many things. Also, studies have claimed that frequent use of social media can cause depression due to seeing everyone’s highlight reel and having unrealistic living standards.
Solving Smartphone Addiction
So, how do you solve smartphone addiction? One of the most effective ways is to unplug. It’s easier said than done. However, it’s possible if you put your mind to it. You can start simply by setting a curfew or using a timer on your phone, so you don’t spend too much time on your phone.
If you can go the extra mile, try avoiding bringing your phone to bed and turn off your notifications. This might be hard initially, but as time goes by, you’ll notice that you won’t need your phone as much. Likewise, you can also try starting a new hobby like painting art, writing a novel, or learning calligraphy. Encouraging other interests will take the mind off your phone and draw your attention away from screens.
Smartphone addiction is a serious issue. The amount of time we spend on these gadgets is surprising. Our smartphones have become a big part of our lives, and it seems we can’t spend a minute without checking our notifications (even in bed). So, what’s the antidote to this compulsion?
